Young gun Hugo Kedzlie is enjoying an impressive start to the season at Spalding Golf Club.

The 13-year-old, who won the April medal and placed second in the Massey Cup in recent weeks, took top spot once again at the EGU London Pride gold medal qualifier at the Surfleet course.

A packed field of almost 150 entries contested the event, with Kedzlie – the current under-14 Midland counties champion – carding a gross 71 (nett 67) to win by three strokes.

Trevor Overson (89-19=70) just edged second place from Keith Moore (85-15=70) on countback after both scored a nett 70.

Darrel Cross (85-14=71) was one shot further back in fourth spot with a nett 71.

Behind the leading quartet, Steve Philips, Raich Growdridge, Calum Walker, Den Wells, Miles Foden, Andy Grimwood, Jerry Philo and Martin North all returned solid scores of 71.

Also performing well with rounds of 73 were Harry Hunt, Stuart Armstrong, John Goode, Steve Rogers and James Crampton.

One of the shots of the day came from Gary Welsh, who holed his second shot on the par four fifth hole for an eagle two in his nett 74.

  • Some 28 teams of four entered the first bank holiday Texas scramble of the year – and with course conditions improving, a spree of good scores were recorded.

The Kedzlie family of Rob, Jocelyn, Hugo and Matilde came out on top with a nett 54.8, with Neil and Di West and David and Irene Brotherton in second spot with a nett 54.95.

The teams of Calum and Craig Lewis and Vince and Anthony Murphy and Bob Pearson, Jenny Pipe and Phil and Hannah Thorold were placed third and fourth respectively.

  • Spalding men’s third team suffered a heavy defeat in their first social match of the season, which was away at Sandilands Golf Club (Sutton-on-Sea).

Team captain Mike Murphy and his charges had a couple of close games, but the seasiders had the edge and ran out 5-0 winners on the day.

LADIES’ SECTION

Carol Thomas took the spoils at Spalding Golf Club ladies section’s Temple Kingston Salver competition.

Her score of +2 was enough to win the bogey competition at the Surfleet course, with Jenny Wilson (+1) and Anita Cross (even) in second and third respectively.

Having performed so well, both Thomas and Wilson saw their handicaps cut by one.

  • Friendly result: Boston West 3 Spalding Ladies 1 (Chris Vickers & Norma Parker lost 3&4, Sue Dewar & Rowena Hughes won 3&2, Mary Ellis & Pam Smith won 4&2, Sarah Halgarth & Julia Colston won 5&4)
