Knitters needed to put tops on bottles

Knitters are being asked to get stitching to help a Spalding charity create 10,000 hats – for fruit drink bottles.

Age UK Spalding has taken part in a project by fruit smoothie makers Innocent to knit the tiny toppers for their products, with each hat worth 25p to the charity.
The aim of the project is to educate older people on the importance of keeping warm in the winter and ways of doing so.
Age UK Spalding has been involved for past six or seven years and last year provided Innocent with around 12,500 bottle hats.
The money it received meant it was able to provide older people with recipes for simple warming meals and hand out leaflets on ways to warm their homes.
Age UK Spalding’s Liz Walmsley said: “We have a lot of knitters who help us out, but we have lost a few and would appreciate the help of anyone else who could knit a few of these little hats for us.
“They don’t have to be fancy and even slow knitters can generally make one in about 40 minutes – it’s a very simple pattern and just about anyone can have a go.”
The charity is also asking for donations of wool to enable it to complete its 10,000 hat target by the end of November.
The knitted creations will then appear on top of Innocent fruit drink bottles in stores in February.
Anyone who is able to help should contact Liz for the hat pattern, to ensure hats are knitted to the correct size, on 01775 720305.
