Holbeach United Sunday set for toughest test yet in county cup semi-final

Co-boss Tim Cole admits that Sunday’s Lincs FA Sunday Cup semi-final at Rustons United is the biggest game in the short history of Holbeach United Sunday.

The Sunday Tigers are bidding to reach the county final at the first time of asking this weekend, with the clash at Newark Road, Lincoln, a 10.45am kick off.

The Spalding Sunday League side have been in superb form in the competition, scoring 42 goals and shipping just three in five matches.

The side jointly managed by Josh Ford and Cole have knocked out Baston, Fleet UC, Bradley Rovers, Metheringham and Scothern United so far.

Cole reckons that Rustons, who are third in the Lincoln Sunday League Premier Division, will prove a sterner test.

But he’s boosted by the returns of key duo Jamie Stevens and Sam Murphy.

Cole said: “This Sunday is by far our biggest game since we formed in June and is absolutely massive.

“We have to make sure we prepare ourselves in the best way possible and, as in previous rounds, we concentrate on ourselves and come out of the starting blocks strong from the first whistle.

“It definitely won’t be an easy game and we are expecting a battle. The one thing we do have, which is extremely important, is a fantastic team spirit. The lads are all good friends and a strong unit.

“At the moment we have no injury concerns ahead of the game – touch wood it stays that way.

“Because we are all such good friends it has made it very hard for Fordy and I to select the 16, as some will miss out.

“But generally the lads have been great with regards to the selection, but as always anything could change between now and Sunday.

“The support has been fantastic, and we filled the coach pretty much straight away, while quite a few are driving across to watch.

“Nerves and excitement are beginning to build already and we have to make sure we give it our all and don’t let ourselves or any of the supporters down.”

Holbeach Sunday have won all 15 of the games they have played since forming in the summer, scoring 133 goals. Chancel FC and The Notts FC will contest the other semi-final.

  • The Holbeach Sunday lads will be attending a disco and karaoke at Tigers Social Club from 5pm onwards after returning from the game. It is open to all who wish to attend.
