Holbeach United book cup final date while nine-man Spalding United are held

Holbeach United roared into the final of the ChromaSport UCL League Cup with a 2-0 victory over Wisbech Town on Wednesday night, while Spalding United had two players sent off as they drew 0-0 at Carlton Town in Evo-Stik NPL Division One South.

Starting with the Tigers, a penalty from Josh Ford (43) and a fine lofted finish from Sean Coughlan (89) were enough for a famous victory at Carter’s Park.

It was the perfect semi-final performance from Tom Roberts’ side, who progress to their first final since lifting the trophy back in 1990.

Awaiting them are Division One heavyweights Peterborough Sports, who are aiming to become the first team from the second tier to win the trophy.

That final will take place at Deeping Rangers’ Haydon Whitham Stadium on Monday, May 2 (3pm).

Meanwhile, it was another away game to forget for Spalding as their play-off hopes took another hefty hit.

Skipper Nathan Stainfield and striker James Tricks both saw red for Marcus Ebdon’s side, who stay 11th.

They are now eight points off the play-offs, but have now played a game more than Lincoln United, who are fifth.

More on both games to follow.
