Historic first Bramley Cup victory for Spalding Golf Club as terrific trio shine

Spalding Golf Club are celebrating after winning the coveted Bramley Trophy for the first time.

The final was played at Seacroft Golf Club and contested by Spalding, Belton Park and Kenwick Park over 36 holes.

Representing Spalding were Andy Grimwood, Hugo Kedzlie and James Crampton – and what a team they made.

With James leading the way against a +5 golfer from Belton, all matches after the morning session were very close.

In the afternoon, all three Spalding players played some brilliant golf and deserved their win.

The cup was presented by the President of the Lincolnshire Golf Union and the presentation was followed by an enjoyable meal.

Captain Mike Crampton thanked the team on their fantastic achievement and also thanked the Spalding spectators for giving the team their support.

  • Spalding Golf Club’s annual match between current and past captains and presidents – plus their guests – was played out amid perfect conditions at the Surfleet course.

Some 32 players took part in eight fourballs match play style showdowns, with the captains emerging as 5-3 winners overall.

Club captain Mike Crampton and club professional Adam Keogh set off first, playing club President Max Ellis and professional John Spencer, with the former winning 4&3.

Roger Davey and Keith Holland then lost 5&3 to David Brotherton and Jim Robertson, while John Walker and Stuart Asher won 1up against Stuart East and Andy Rafferty.

Meanwhile, Peter Gooderson and Frank Bell won 4&3 against Tony Holbrook and Steve Watson, then Paddy Goslyn and Alan Roper lost 4&3 to Rob Dunmore and Kevin Siddle.

Laurie Hayley and Phil Thorold lost 3&2 to Mike Gould and Tony Bray, with Andy Reedman and Dave Perrott winning 4&3 against Rob Groves and Dave Millgate.

Finally, Geoff Skinner and Stewart Sharp cruised to an 8&6 success against Peter Clark and Paul Johnson to round of the match.

Other results: Men’s section Presidents Putter Qualifier: 1st Maurice Crunkhorn 69; 2nd Steve Phillips 69; 3rd. Chris Wanham 70; 4th Charles Lacey 70; 5th Keith Hearne 70.

  • Ladies’ section: Elaine Hancock is celebrating after winning Spalding Golf Club’s annual Ladies’ Championship Day event.

Some 40 ladies entered the tournament, which included a series of competitions at the Surfleet course.

Of those ladies, 13 entered the Barbara Watson Salver, a 36-hole gross competition for competitors in Division One (0 to 20 handicap), with 11 playing all 36 holes.

Hancock’s gross of 170 was enough for overall glory, but the best morning net came from Ruth Atkins (76) and the afternoon net winner was Mathilde Kedzlie (77). Paula Brown’s 152 was also the best overall net score.

The Jean Farrow Plate, for those with handicaps 21 to 28, was won by Gill Dewhurst with a net 71. That earned her a handicap cut of one shot.

The Myers Shield, for those with handicaps of 29 to 36, was won by Deborah Ellis (76), while the Double Trophy (Division Two players) was won by Jenny Van Gemeren with a gross 93 (one shot reduction).

  • Spalding ladies’ A Team have secured survival in their league for another year. The last two matches were both at home, the first against Woodhall Spa resulted in a drawn match.

Results: Lois Williamson and Pat West lost 2 down, Mathilde Kedzlie and Angela Roper won 4&3, Elaine Hancock and Elizabeth Holbrook won 4&3, and Lesley Williams and Anita Cross lost 2&1.

The last match against Blankney resulted in 3-1 victory.

Results: Angela Roper and Elaine Hancock won 6&4, Elizabeth Holbrook and Maria Williamson lost 4&3, Nicky Weller and Paula Brown won 2&1 and Anita Cross & Ruth Atkins won 6&5.

  • Friendly results: Spalding 2 Boston 2 (Hannah Thorold & Jenny Wilson won 3&2, Beryl Clay and Rowena Hughes lost 1 down, Jean White & Jennifer Pipe won 6&4 and Eden Inglis & Elaine Harrison lost 6&5).

Sutton Bridge 0 Spalding 4 (Jean White & Jenny Wilson who won 1up, Elizabeth Holbrook & Sally West won 8&7, Lainey Macleman & Beryl Skinner won 4&3, Eden Inglis & Maureen Orwell won 5&4).

Spalding 3 Tydd St Giles 1 (Jean White & Anne Ellis lost 2&1, Tilly Garfoot & Deborah Ellis won 6&4, Jacquie Clare & Sue Dewar won 3&1, Gill Dewhurst & Lisa Howling won 4&3).
