Pinchbeck United slipped to their third defeat from four Uhlsport UCL Premier Division games this season as previously winless Anstey Nomads handed them a 2-0 reverse on Saturday.

Goals in either half from Sam Thorpe (31) and Dean Hopewell (64) earned the promoted side their first league win of the season at Cropston Road on a day when the Knights offered very little going forward.

Player/boss Ian Dunn was able to hand a debut to new signing Eugene Francis, with the striker joining from Radford.

He was buoyed by his showing, but admits plenty more new faces are required.

“Anstey are a good side and much better than the table suggests – which we already knew,” admitted Dunn. “They deserved to win the game.

“I don’t think we were ever opened up or put under huge amounts of pressure.

“Both goals came from our mistakes; the first was after the biggest period of pressure and the second was smashed into the roof of the net from long range after we failed to clear our lines properly.

“It’s been a bit of a common theme for us this season really and I know I keep saying the same things. I’m not panicking, we know that there’s a big rebuild job to do here.

“We had a new signing in Eugene Francis and he looked a real handful in attack, but we still need quite a few more.

“We’re always slow starters and this has been the case again.

“This side has only been together for a few weeks and we’ve got lots to do.”

The defeat leaves Pinchbeck down in 17th place in the early standings.

Knights: Lovelace, Gordon, Forth, Ross, Worthington, Newman (Dementer 68), Edwards (Kacirek 75), Bishop (Eyes 86), Maltby, Nuttell, Francis. Not used: Gaukroger.
