At 87 years old, Dora Watkin could be forgiven for not wanting the fuss of the latest technology.

Yet the effervescent nan is positively embracing it – by buying an Apple iPhone.
“Everyone seems to have got one and I was starting to feel a bit left out,” she said.

Dora’s getting to grips with texting family members and enjoys looking at photos which granddaughter Gemma Stothard has loaded on to the smartphone.
She said: “I’ve only had it a few days but I’m getting the hang of it.

“I don’t know how to use Facebook on it yet but I will do. Gradually I shall use it all – Gemma’s teaching me one thing at once because my memory is not too good these days.”

Dora, of Spalding, is enjoying later life after an equallly busy working career which included 20 years as an elderly people’s warden and a stint as canteen manager at Levertons in Westlode Street.
She is still very young at heart, having recently read the racy Fifty Shades of Grey books and seen the film 12 Years A Slave at the South Holland Centre.

Dora said: “A lot of people give up at my time of life but I just want to get with it.
“I try to keep up with the latest stuff, like fashion and books and films.
“I think it’s important to make the most of life while you’re still here!”

Gemma (29) is really close to her nan, speaking to her most days and enjoying a weekly takeaway and glass of wine.

She said: “I think it’s great that she’s got an iPhone – it keeps her brain active and gives her a little giggle.
“She’s sent me a few texts but I can’t really understand them!

“She wanted to be on Facebook so that she could talk to people about the war but I had to tell her there’s probably not too many on there her age!”
