Brenda’s work bags her a chance to be a winner in our POSH awards

Nominations are already coming in for POSH people – those who are the Pride of South Holland and deserving of an award.

The Pride of South Holland Awards have been launched by the Spalding and South Holland Voice in association with Tulip Radio and Spalding and District Area Chamber to honour those who go above and beyond to make their communities a better place to live, work and relax.

Categories where nominations have already been received include Caring Neighbour, Lifetime Achievement, Community Project and Community Hero.

Brenda Wickham is one of those already nominated for Community Hero for her work at the Pennygate Foundation Community drop-in centre, which has also been nominated separately for the Community Project Award.

Rosie Smith and Mike Johnson, of Spalding, have nominated Brenda, who they describe as “totally selfless”.

Their nomination reads: “Brenda works tirelessly for others and is totally selfless, always thinking of ideas by which she can help the local community in the Pennygate and local area.

“She makes sure some people who are living alone get some sort of sustenance and if she has time she will visit them for a chat and to see that they are OK.”

Brenda is involved in cooking breakfasts and meals at the centre, which has recently opened next door to Pennygate Health Centre, as well as providing tea and coffee, cakes and pastries to those who use the facility.

Rosie and Mike say Brenda is ably assisted by a few “stalwart” volunteers, but added: “If this lady was a soldier she would walk lopsided with the many medals for her deeds towards humanity.”

The pair have also nominated the Pennygate Foundation project, set up jointly by Mrs Wickham and Dr Azmeena Nathu, for its own award because of the service it offers to so many people.

As well as providing food and drinks and somewhere to meet new friends, the centre also provides a massage and chiropody service and a book lending library.

It is also hoped it will expand in time to provide facilities to play darts, cards and snooker, as well as somewhere people can enjoy music.

Rosie and Mike’s nominations will now be passed to the category sponsors who will eventually choose a shortlist of worthy winners to go before the Pride of South Holland judging panel in June.

The shortlisted nominees and guests will be invited to attend an afternoon of entertainment at Spalding’s South Holland Centre on Saturday, July 11.

The event will be preceded by a drinks reception before a ceremony where winners will be presented with certificates and trophies.

Information on ticket prices and how to get hold of them will be available nearer the time.

But now we need your nominations to join Brenda and the Pennygate Foundation.

Take a look at the award categories below and then fill in the nomination form on the facing page, not forgetting to send a separate sheet with information about why you are nominating that person.
