The Voice of Spalding and South Holland
I note with interest the possibility of average speed cameras being introduced to the A16 between Spalding and Crowland (The Voice, July 16) and welcome this method against the fixed camera.
I also favour the reactive signs that put up actual speeds because although not 100 per cent effective they do have an embarrassment factor.
To me this is only part of the solution and the powers that be must not lose sight of the driver attitudes and the dangers presented by the two junctions for the B1166 and B1040.
The confusion caused by the centre island road markings which effectively add to a total of nine give way positions at the B1166 and there is no clear instruction as to who has the right of way in the centre of the road.
If this was replaced by a roundabout there would only be four give way points needed and any driver with experience can cope with a roundabout, but I am not so sure how many have confidence with the existing layout.
There is then the situation of driver attitudes and lack of driver knowledge with the users of the road and it is pretty clear that the majority of drivers do not have a clue how to behave on the road or how to manoeuvre and handle a vehicle at anything faster than stationery.
This again is a project in waiting for the road safety partnership LRSP.
Get out on the A16 and see for yourself what goes on all day and then embark on a campaign of driver awareness. Encourage drivers to look at their own behaviour and promote the organisations that can provide driving improvement.
To all you drivers who think you are good, then prove it, take a course with the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) or ROSPA.
That way you will all learn something and it should make you just that bit more likely to walk up to your own front door at the end of the day rather than a police officer going to tell your loved ones you will not be coming home again.
The building of a roundabout will take a lot of stress out of journeys but we as drivers can do a whole lot by improvement to help ourselves.
