More than 200 tonnes of rubbish – the equivalent weight of 30 adult elephants – has been cleaned up as part of the district council’s Pride in South Holland campaign.
Litter and fly-tipping which blighted alleyways, footpaths, roadsides and verges has been blitzed by the council’s street sweeping team, with items including car tyres, bags full of rubbish and a bath removed.
Areas cleared include Crowland, Cowbit, Deeping St Nicholas, Donington, Holbeach, Surfleet, Sutton Bridge and Long Sutton as well as A16 and A17 roundabouts and traffic islands. Teams will continue to scour the district.
Last week community payback teams tidied areas in Spalding including Low Road, Queens Road and Enterprise Way industrial estate.
Coun Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for waste management, said: “The Pride in South Holland campaign has made a positive and noticeable impact across the district.
“We are also working hard to prevent fly-tipping and littering. Our environmental enforcement officer has been very busy familiarising himself and dealing with our hotspots and the number of reported fly-tipping incidents in December was half what we expected.”
The Pride in South Holland campaign was launched last year, to target eyesore sites across the district and has already made a big difference.
The former Bull and Monkie pub site in Spalding was tidied up and other sites are now being actively targeted. Over the coming weeks, as the weather improves, the campaign will also see play equipment across the district repainted.
