New homes set for approval

Permission for more than 250 new homes in South Holland looks likely to be granted at a district council meeting next week.

A number of applications are due to be discussed by members of the planning committee and, if the recommendations given are agreed, the new homes will be given the green light.

They include 185 in Holbeach at Battlefields Lane, 48 in Surfleet, nine flats when the former Spalding sorting office is converted and seven flats when a dance studio is converted in the town.

There will also be three new homes at back of The Chequers in Holbeach.

The largest development comes with section 106 conditions which include a developer contribution of £1.3m to education and £122,000 for the NHS from Cicero Estates.

Holbeach Parish Council says there are too many objections to allow the development to proceed, but it is recommended to go ahead.

The Surfleet application is revised but still has a number of objections including some from South Holland and The Deepings MP Sir John Hayes who says it is an over-development of the site.

Ashley King Developments have revised the plan but continue to disagree with an independent assessment on affordable housing and contribution amounts.

“However, in order to secure the consent, they will accept the affordable housing and contribution amounts,” says the report.

The developers will also pay more than £150,000 to local schools and a further £31,680 to the NHS.

In conclusion, the report says the ‘benefits of the scheme would result in a sustainable development.”

Converting the ‘neglected and decaying, former sorting office in Spalding will create nine flats with a retail space on the ground floor.

Built in 1961, the prominent building is within a conservation area and the plan had one objection relating to a lack of parking.

A proposal to change a Spalding dance and fitness studio into seven flats is also recommended for approval.

The application, for a Spring Gardens address, has been submitted by Market Homes Ltd.

The gothic-style building is in a prominent place and is also Grade II listed and the plans look to retain original features and open-plan character.

One detached home and a pair of semi-detached at the rear of The Chequers in Holbeach are also recommended to go ahead.
