Apprentices lead the way

Four apprentices at a Donington company are championing the route into work as part of a new campaign.

The British Woodworking Federation (BWF) is using their stories to highlight the benefits of becoming an apprentice.

Harry Twelves, Alfie Twell, Jan Grzejszczak and Chris Attwood all work as apprentices at George Barnsdale and gained their roles via the apprentice route.

All four are highlighted in the campaign and share their journey, achievement and successes.

The construction industry is facing a skills shortage, saying some 43,000 new entrants are needed every year for five years to plug the gaps.

“Hearing direct from apprentices and apprentice graduates in our profession about why they chose a career in woodworking and joinery is inspirational for the next generations,” said Helen Hewitt, CEO of the BWF.

George Barnsdale, which makes windows and doors, started in 1884 in Donington Market Place. It now uses modern technology in production.
