Vandalism incident left dementia carer upset

A woman who looks after dementia patients at a Spalding care home said she was left distraught after someone targeted her and a colleague’s car while working on the night shift.

Carol Samson found her car passenger side window smashed as she was finishing a 12-hour shift on Saturday morning (May 2).

Her colleague’s car had also been targeted but she believes an alarm triggered when an attempt was made to open the door of that car led to those responsible fleeing.

Carol does not want to say which care home she works at.

She said: “I was so upset it brought on my asthma.

“I don’t understand why you would target carers.

“It was incredibly upsetting to be told my window had been smashed, especially as it came at the end of a 12-hour shift helping dementia patients.

“I live on my own and it’s left me shaken.

“There were only two cars at the home as three members of staff were working the night shift at the time.

“They broke the window and rummaged around in the glove box, but there wasn’t anything taken.

“It appears they tried to get into the other car, but the alarm went off and they fled.”

As Carol’s car, a Renault Megane, is 20 years old, she says it’s proving difficult to find the correct replacement glass for the vehicle.

She’s currently having to find alternate ways to get to the job she loves.

Carol continued: “I became a carer three years ago after I’d been made redundant from a small accountancy firm and I’ve absolutely loved it.

“I’ve realised that I just love to help people.”
