Tulip Talk with Jan Whitbourn

TulipMania took place at Springfields over the traditional Bank Holiday weekend.

The festival encourages us to remember the Flower Parade and its heritage and to celebrate the work the parade achieved putting Spalding on the international map.

The main event took place on Saturday and featured the judging of the TulipMania Prince and Princess competition. The winners, Bradley Grant and Marisa Kieviets, will represent the area at a number of events over the next year. Also appointed were deputies, Jake Winkett and Mollie Bracey, who will stand in when required.

Saturday also saw the stunning Watoto Children’s School Choir who produced one of the most inspirational performances seen yet.

We at Tulip Radio were privileged to be joined by one of their number, Ivan, who stood in as our sound engineer for two hours whilst the rest of the crew dealt with a minor problem. Like all the Watoto personnel he was charm and politeness personified and we’ve asked him back to help us again in the future.

Diamondz Dance produced a typical slick performance as did Tracey Vowels from Spalding’s Fitness Company who demonstrated how to keep fit as well as have fun.

Sunday’s weather presented a raft of problems and meant that several performances had to be cancelled; however the ever reliable Dennis Hannant sang a selection of crowd pleasing swing numbers on both days, as well as the popular Frozen crew, pleasing the young with their snow!

The Classic Car show was a smaller version than seen in previous years due entirely to the weather with many enthusiasts declining to bring their cars out in wet weather. Such is the stuff of an English summer!

Thank you to all those who helped and performed at the event.
