Thorogood’s relief as “massive” victory ends Pinchbeck United’s winless streak

A second-half Nick Jackson strike gave Pinchbeck United a massive 2-1 win at relegation rivals Selston on Saturday as they moved out of the Uhlsport UCL Premier Division North drop zone.

The Knights, who hadn’t won in any competition since September 11, got off to the perfect start in Nottinghamshire when Zane Millar netted after only two minutes.

Centre-back Jackson doubled Pinchbeck’s money when he turned home from a corner on the hour at Mansfield Road.

Jay Cooper returned for the hosts 20 minutes from time, but Lewis Thorogood’s side – who also hit the woodwork through Jack Fixter – held firm to register their third league success of the season and complete the double over Selston.

For Thorogood, who had Kyle Onyon back in the fold after re-signing the striker from Bourne Town, the victory was “massive” and a first official league win on the road since the successful 2018/19 season.

“It’s obviously a bit of a relief,” said Thorogood. “We’re all very glad to have ended our losing run and get this win.

“It’s a massive result for us, really, as it gets us out of the relegation zone and applies some pressure to Selston too.

“If we hadn’t seen it out and got the win, it would have made things difficult for us.

“Doing the double over Selston is also a bit of a psychological boost for us, while pushing them below us in the table, down into the relegation zone and into a place they obviously don’t want to be.

“It takes the pressure off us a bit ahead of a run of games that we can look to gather momentum in, too.

“This result and performance show what we can achieve as a group. We perhaps could have scored more goals on the day, but what was more important was the heart and desire we showed.

“Winning away from home for the first time this season is also a bit of a monkey off our back, too.

“We also welcomed back Kyle Onyon from the bench, which was a boost, and Will Hollingsworth again performed admirably in only his second game.”
