Table-topping Spalding Town’s start has Ambrose purring

Skipper Rob Ambrose is very satisfied at the start Spalding Town 1st have made to the season – but has warned them to keep their foot on the gas.

Last Saturday (May 21) Town moved top of the South Lincs and Border League Premier Division for the first time this season with a ten-wicket win at Grantham 2nd.

Ambrose knows his charges are there to be shot at now but is just happy to enjoy the moment after a miserable relegation campaign last year.
He said: “It’s been tough for us this last couple of seasons so it’s definitely nice to be where we are right now.
“It’s certainly a lot easier than it has been for us, but we’re taking nothing for granted. The fact is that, as it stands, even if we were to win every game from now until the end of the season we could still finish behind Market Deeping 2nd.”

He added: “It’s looking like it’s perhaps between two or three teams this season so we can’t really afford to lose many more games.”

Town host second-placed Boston 2nd on Saturday without opener Warren Nel, who has been in irresistible form so far.
He followed up a knock of 100 not out in the home win over Belton Park with an unbeaten 50 last weekend.

Over those two matches Town have lost just one wicket and seen Nel and Josh Newton set a club record 219 first-wicket partnership.

The only problem with them firing so well is that other batsmen are having to sit and watch.
Ambrose said: “I suppose it’s a little bit of concern that the lads at three, four, five and six are not getting in but I can’t really complain because of how Josh and Nelly have been playing.”

The captain, who had planned to open regularly this season before an elbow problem occurred, is set to take Nel’s role on Saturday.

Meanwhile, after being unavailable last weekend, Tim Norris returns as Town seek a fifth win in six matches.
