Table tennis round-up: Jokers signal their intent with a five-star win

In contrast to last week, the Spalding and District Table Tennis League was quite busy – with eight matches played in part.

In Division One, Jokers set out their challenge for the top with a 5-0 demolition of Nets n Edges, the latter’s third
of the season.

Wesley Roper and Guntars Briedes won all the singles in straight ends and Ionel Dumitrache replaced Briedes in the doubles win.

South Holland met Underdogs, the title being a self-fulfilling prophecy as they went down 4-1.

Holland’s Piotr Olstowska, Holland won both of his singles either side of the doubles win, while John Gilbert had picked up their first point.

Kelvin Preville, meanwhile, won a consolation point in the final singles.

South Holland had also completed their unfinished match with JDM, whose planned fixture was postponed.

Continuing from the latter leading 2-0, Olstowska levelled the singles scores so the doubles decided the result.

This went to Holland giving them a narrow win and top spot ahead of their rivals.

The final top flight match saw Moulton SE face a one-man team from Mine’s a Pint.

The Appleby brothers proved to be too strong and took both singles played for the lead.

In Division Two, Rusty Nails and Hit and Hope both recorded 4-1 victories.

The former saw off Assassins with John Hayter taking two points.

Richard Matthews, already having taken the first game and the doubles in between, took them four up.

However, Hannah Gilbert spoiled the party by taking the final singles for Assassins.

Hit and Hope’s match with Deeping Lads was anything but straightforward.

Martyn Boyle got the Lads off to a good start with a win in five ends, before Tony Dorey levelled in four.

Hopers took the lead with the doubles in straight ends, but with two deuces, before the last two singles went their way in five ends and four.

Earlier on, Underdogs went through to the semis of the Moulton Shield, taking the third singles for a winning margin against Team TJ.

Anyone wishing to try out table tennis will be most welcome at the High School Sports Hall on a Tuesday evening from 7.30pm-10pm at a cost of £4 for the evening.
