Spalding’s Stu storms to Massey Cup glory

V SPORT

Stuart Parker was on impressive form to see off a sizeable field and win Spalding Golf Club’s Massey Cup qualifying competition.

The 11-handicapper continued his excellent early-season form by scoring 41 Stableford points at the Surfleet course.Teenage talent Hugo Kedzlie (5), another to have performed admirably so far this campaign, took second spot on countback from Doug Garfoot (13) after both finished on 40 points.

Only the top eight progress to the matchplay knock-out stage later in the season.

They were: 39pts – Dave Perrott, Lloyd Chatham, Wayne Wallace; 38pts – Stephen Baxendale and John Beaumont.

Other leading (but non-qualifying) scores came from: 38pts – Carl Sewell, Simon Goemans; 37pts – Charles Lacey.

To complete an excellent day for Parker, he had his handicap reduced from 11 to 8 for exceptional good play.

Kedzlie, who is just 13, also saw his handicap drop one to four.

  •  The annual England versus Ireland golf challenge match was played at the weekend – and it was England skipper Bob Pearson’s team who regained the Shillelagh Trophy with a convincing 12.5-7.5 victory over his counterpart John Walker and his Irish team.

Skipper Pearson and Sue Matthews (4&3), Bob Sutton and Hannah Thorold (4&3), and Peter Gooderson and Graham Hutchings (2up) were the pick of the English winners, while Keith Williams and Elizabeth Holbrook and Keith Moore and Eileen Bridge (both 4&3) performed well for Ireland.

Boxing legend Dave ‘Boy’ Green again showed his support, turning out for the England team – but the real winner on the day was the three captains’ chosen charity, for which more than £400 was raised.
