Spalding RFC youngsters shine at Prima Cup to book Welford Road date

The young guns from Spalding RFC under-10 offered an exciting glimpse of their talent as they triumphed at the Leicester Tigers Prima Cup tournament.

Town took a squad of 15 to the event and were drawn in Group D alongside Chesterfield, Newcastle, Burntwood and Trentham – all teams they’d never faced before.

First up was Trentham, with Spalding 2-0 winners after managing to score a couple of breakaway tries.

Town then defeated Newcastle 3-1 thanks to a pair of late tries, before they roared to a thumping 5-0 success over Chesterfield.

The final game of the group stage was against Burntwood, who had won two and drawn one – making it a ‘must-win’ game for both teams.

Spalding scored the one vital try to win 1-0, meaning they clinched a clean sweep and were through to the final against Syston.

The final was a tremendous show of rugby, with both teams giving their all – making it a shame that there had to be a loser.

However, it was Spalding who managed to get two tries across the line and end the day as winners of final two. The main prize for their efforts was an invitation to the quarter and semi-finals of

the tournament at Welford Road on February 6.

Spalding RFC’s three coaches said: “The highlight for us was a comment by the Tigers’ organiser. He said that every team we had played had commented on how much they had enjoyed playing against us.

“We played hard, but fairly, and always with the spirit of the sport in mind.

“Well done to the team.”
