Spalding drinker jailed for unprovoked attack with pint glass in pub

A drinker who hit another man over the head with a beer glass in an unprovoked attack in a pub has been jailed for 12 months.
Carl Robertson downed his pint and put his glass on the bar at the Hole in the Wall in Spalding but seconds later picked up the glass and used it to attack Graham Drury.
Phil Howes, prosecuting, told Lincoln Crown Court on Wednesday (August 3): “The defendant picked the glass up, stepped towards the complainant and hit him twice over the forehead. He hit the complainant very hard. The glass didn’t smash. The base of the glass hit the complainant causing a two to three centimetres laceration.”
Robertson was removed from the pub. He left his phone behind at the scene and as a result police were later able to trace him.
Mr Drury was taken to hospital in Peterborough where he received treatment for a cut to the head. The wound was cleaned and dressed and he was sent home.
Mr Howes said: “The defendant was interviewed and couldn’t remember anything about this.
“It is by no means clear what the motivation was for the defendant striking him. There was no interaction between them and they didn’t know each other.”
Robertson (27) of Little London, Spalding, admitted a charge of unlawful wounding arising out of the incident on March 19 this year.
Judge Michael Heath, passing sentence, told him: “If you hit somebody over the head twice in a public house then you have to go to prison.”
Christopher Geeson, in mitigation, urged the judge to pass a suspended jail sentence.
He told the court: “He has never been in trouble before for violence.
“He can’t say why this happened. He says he was very, very drunk. He cannot remember having any interaction with the complainant at all.”
Mr Geeson said that Robertson acted out of character and is contrite.
