The fly-tip in Pullman Court.

Resident’s anger over tips under warning sign

A Spalding cul-de-sac resident says she and her neighbours are fed up after four-years of fly-tipping underneath a ‘fly-tippers will be prosecuted’ sign.

Amanda Goddard says she and fellow Pullmans Court residents are fed up of it being used as a fly-tip site, particularly as the dumped rubbish ends up blowing into their own front gardens.

She says she’s been ringing South Holland District Council several times a month since 2017.

“It’s a lovely road which everyone keeps trim, but at the top of the road it’s literally a right tip,” Amanda said. “I ring the council two or three times, the ladies in the office are lovely, then the council comes and picks it up and then two or three days later more rubbish is dumped.

“Whoever is dumping it there must think it’s a game putting it under a ‘fly-tippers will be prosecuted’ sign.

“I’ve been ringing about it for five years and within those years they’ve put the sign up but it’s not effective if they’re not prosecuted.

“We’ve seen documents in there that could identify someone including many bank statements.

“Given how much it must cost to remove it, surely it would be more cost-effective to put a camera up there.”

Mrs Goddard got in contact after The Voice’s article from January 13 after the Spalding Wombes’s FOI request revealed that South Holland District Council had not made a single fly-tipping prosecution in the 12 months preceding January 7.

A spokesman for the district council said: “We are aware of the ongoing issues with fly-tipping and early presentation of waste around Pullman Court, and the site is being actively monitored by our enforcement officers. We would always encourage residents to report these problems directly to us so we can clear the area quickly and assess the waste that has been dumped.

“Prosecutions for fly-tipping can be complex and can take as long as twelve months before a result is reached. Prompt reporting and the providing of further information through witness statements are a key part of the success of this, and we would always encourage people to do this where they are able to.

“A minority of residents putting their refuse and recycling bags out days before they are due to be collected encourages more to do so, also leading to larger fly-tips and impacting the look and feel of the surrounding area. We all have a collective responsibility to do what we can to keep our towns, villages and countryside clean and safe.”
