President’s Putter goes to John after tight finish

John Anthony Spencer emerged top of the pile after a three-way tie in Spalding Golf Club’s Men’s Presidents Putter competition.

For the first time this year the Surfeet course succumbed to the field with a quarter of entrants playing to or below their handicap.

The other players finishing on 66 were second-placed Mark Cooley and Roy Foden.

Other notable scores included a gross 68 from Andy Grimwood and a gross 70 from James Crampton.

  •  Spalding’s 3rd team enjoyed a whitewash win over Sandilands at Surfleet.

The pairings’ winning margins were Mike Murphy and Stuart Parker 7&5, Mick Hanson and Mick Bell 9&7, Jim Manson and Pete Spencer 6&5, Alan Jackson & Peter Julien 6&4, and Sam Sampson and Ken Murray 2&1.

  • One of the highlights of the mixed team calendar is the match at King’s Lynn, but Spalding returned with a narrow defeat.

Winning pairs in the 5.5-4.5 result were Rod Filby and Olive Gooderson (6&5), Peter Gooderson and Hannah Thorold (3&1) , and Phil Thorold and Elizabeth Holbrook (1up). Pairings which halved were Bob Atkins and Millie Thorold, Roger Brown and Theresa Starbuck, and Bob Sutton and Mags McArdle.

  • Gents’ social match: Spalding 5 Sutton Bridge 1. Winners were Peter Bridge and Stuart Asher (2&1), John Crampton and Stewart Sharp (8&7), Peter Jullien and John Moses (1up), Monty Brittain and Rod Filby (5&3) , and Howard Greaves and Peter Sanders (2&1).
