Pre-season: King stunner gives Spalding United first win, Holbeach United hold Stamford

A classy Gary King free-kick earned Spalding United a 1-0 friendly win at Rainworth Miners Welfare on Tuesday night.

The goal was the Tulips’ first in pre-season and also King’s maiden strike back in blue.

The victory was a welcome boost for Chris Rawlinson’s charges, who slipped to a 1-0 reverse at ChromaSport UCL Premier Division outfit Boston Town on Saturday.

This Saturday sees Spalding welcome another UCL Premier Division side – Peterborough Northern Star – to the Sir Halley for a friendly clash (3pm).

The Tulips are also in home friendly action on Tuesday, with Kettering the visitors (7.45pm).

  • Holbeach United warmed up for their opening ChromaSport UCL Premier Division fixture against Sleaford Town on Saturday with a 2-2 friendly draw against Stamford at Carter’s Park on Tuesday.

George Zuerner and Stacy Cartwright were the scorers for the Tigers, with ex-Holbeach ace Jake Duffy netting one of the Stamford goals.

  • Pinchbeck United were 2-1 winners at Boston Town on Monday night thanks to strikes from Andrew Tidswell and Josh Smith.

They begin their UCL Division One season at Huntingdon Town on Friday night.

  • Long Sutton Athletic, who begin their season against Tydd St Mary on Sunday, were beaten 3-1 by King’s Lynn Town Reserves on Tuesday.
