Pond improvement works start

Work to renovate the pond in Ayscoughfee Gardens has begun funded by Section 106 money.

£8,000 is to be spent on the improvements which include deep-cleaning of the pond, repairing the main structure and filtration system, re-waterproofing, fixing of the fountains and the planting of new reed beds.

The first major improvements since the 1980s, carried out by local contractor Kirkys Koi with assistance from Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, will last for around four weeks, with the carp which have resided there for several decades due to be temporarily rehomed whilst work takes place.

Coun Rodney Grocock, South Holland District Council portfolio holder for assets and planning, said the work will “help to protect and improve another of our much-loved and used assets in the district”.

Coun Gary Taylor, South Holland District Council portfolio holder for communities and facilities, said: “Ayscoughfee Gardens has played such an important role in the lives of many local residents throughout the challenges of the past couple of years, offering a beautiful place to get some fresh air and see people within easy reach of the town centre.

“As a council we are committed to continuing to improve the Gardens, and to ensure they remain a fantastic place to visit for people of all ages. These refurbishments will help get them looking their best ahead of the popular summer months, and provide support to the local wildlife, including our fish, that depend upon the pond.”
