PDFL round-up: Long Sutton suffer semi-final defeat but give rivals a real test

Long Sutton Athletic missed out on a place in the final of the PFSDF Peterborough Senior Cup after going down 3-1 at much-fancied Netherton United on Saturday.

The Magpies gave the ChromaSport PDFL Premier Division title favourites a strong game at The Grange 3G, but goals from Zack Fisher (2) and Robbie Ellis earned the hosts a place in the final.

Ace goal-getter Jake Clitheroe did haul the Magpies level at one point, but they eventually succumbed in the difficult conditions caused by Storm Dennis.

Fisher fired the hosts ahead in the first period, but Clitheroe soon restored parity with a goal turned home from a corner.

Dan Monaghan’s Magpies then had a goal ruled out for offside, before second-half strikes from Ellis and Fisher sent Netherton through.

Only two other matches involving South Holland sides took place in the PDFL on Saturday – and both were in Division One.

Spalding Town, who have endured a torrid campaign so far, were handed a 7-1 reverse by hosts Premiair.

Lee Clementson led the home scoring spree with a hat-trick, with Lee Calitri, Billy Wright, Giorgio Calitri and Joe Dobson getting the others.

Also defeated were Moulton Harrox Reserves, who went down 5-3 at Wittering Harriers. Alex Lyon (2) and sub Ryan Wheeler netted for Harrox.
