Next phase of first section of Spalding Western Relief Road to start on Monday

The next phase of work on the most northerly section of the proposed Spalding Western Relief Road is due to start next week.

Works to build a haul road construction and dig a final set of trial holes will start at the site off Spalding Road on Monday, (February 15).

Coun Richard Davies, Lincolnshire County Council’s executive member for highways, said: “We’ll be starting the final phase of our pre-construction works on-site next week, including building a haul road for construction traffic off of Spalding Road.

“We’ll also be digging a series of trial holes to help locate underground utilities and better understand what ground conditions are like where this first section new relief road will be built.”

Below are details about the final preparatory works (dates and timeframes subject to suitable weather):

·         Haul road construction – work will start on Monday, February 15 for up to three weeks and will not require any traffic management. There may be some construction vehicles using Spalding Road to access the site of the new haul road during this timeframe but this will not cause disruption to drivers.

·         Trial holes – work will start on Monday February 15 for up to five days. One of the trial holes will be dug on Spalding Road so temporary daytime traffic signals will be in place near its junction with Enterprise Way from 8am to 4:30pm.

·         Other preparatory works – a final section of vegetation removal and gas protection works will be carried out over the coming weeks. Dates are still being finalised but these will take place away from any roads and will not require traffic management.

Coun Davies continued: “This final set of preliminary works, most of which will take place in fields away from the road network, should only have a minimal effect on people traveling in and around Spalding.

“When working near the carriageway, the team will do everything they can to keep disruption to a minimum, including working to get the works completed as quickly as possible.”

Main construction works for the northern section of the Spalding Western Relief Road are expected to start this spring, with initial construction taking place away from local roads until late autumn (more details about traffic management to be shared once finalised and confirmed).

Planning permission has also been granted for the southern section, but as yet the middle sections have yet to be properly funded.
