LONG JUMPER: Emma Hornsby set a new best for Nene Valley in Sheffield.

Nene Valley Harrier Emma sets a new club record at BUCS Championships

Nene Valley Harries had a host of athletes in action at the British Universities and Colleges Sport Championships at Sheffield over the weekend.

Leading the way was Emma Hornsby (who was representing Loughborough) with a fifth place in the long jump.

She managed a new club record distance of 5.60m and entered round three in second place, but still ended up just 11cm behind the eventual winner.

James McCrae (Birmingham) had another good weekend at the English Institute of Sport, setting a new 800m club record in his heat and beating it further in the semi-final to just miss out on a final place.

He clocked 1.56.6mins in the heat, before finishing third with a new club record time of 1.55.47mins in the semi.

Although in different pools, Nene Valley had two ladies in the triple jump. Emily Maltby (Bedfordshire) was slightly off her season’s best with a distance of 10.95m and unfortunately missed the final places by just 1cm.

Javelin specialist, Ellie Mae Stokes (Gloucestershire) was also competing in her ‘secondary’ event and recorded a distance of 10.12m, having clocked a personal best (PB) time of 8.78secs in the 60m sprint the night before.

Also in the 60m sprints was Jake Berney (East Anglia), who ran a season best of 7.34secs in his heat, while Helen Chapman ran an indoor PB of 66.71secs in the 400m and then 29.4secs in the 200m.

Sean Garmory (Newcastle) also managed 53.57secs in his 400m heat.
