Maureen is a caring and committed senior citizen

A pensioner who still works tirelessly to help others is our first nominee for a Pride of South Holland Senior Citizen Award.

Maureen Scantlebury (72), of Spalding, has been nominated in the category sponsored by Calthrops Solicitors by her daughter Claire Ward for her numerous roles in local projects.

Since retiring 12 years ago, Maureen has worked as a volunteer for Age Concern, supporting the elderly with tasks such as shopping, and been a volunteer for Peterborough Youth Offending Service, providing support and guidance to young offenders for ten years now.

Maureen is also a trained bereavement counsellor and has helped numerous local people manage their grief, facilitating a weekly group at St Barnabas in Spalding for several years in succession.

She has given steadfast support to the Welland Seniors Forum, having been chairman for several years, orgnaising regular events with the aim of ensuring that local senior citizens can access the support they need to remain safe and enjoy their lives.

She pulls together events, securing guest speakers that can both inform and teach new skills in addition to arranging social events such as the annual Christmas dinner and trip to the pantomime.

Fundraising is also an important part of this role whether it be through charitable events or bidding for national funds.

In addition, Maureen is also treasurer of the Pennygate Patient Link, and is heavily involved in fundraising for this local cause.

Claire said: “Add to this the fact that she has an eldelry neighbour wth no family support, for whom she visits and helps on almost a daily basis.

“Not to mention the absolute unconditional love and support she gives her own family.

“At the age of 72, Maureen remains an active, caring and committed member of the local community and fully deserves recognition for her voluntary work which has helped such a wide cross section of people.”
