LETTERS – Was expenditure necessary?

I would like to congratulate SHDC in their speed and efficiency in restoring the markers they had provided in town in the form of yellow indicators on footpaths to indicate which direction one is supposed to walk.

They even employed assistors who I understand came from Lincoln, to advise the general population of Spalding to keep two metre distant.

Over the whole period of the lockdown I have walked my dog usually twice a day all over Spalding and have always been pleasantly surprised by all other walkers at their awareness of the government advice.

Generally on narrow footpaths when seeing a walker coming in my direction either I or the oncomer would cross the road to the other side or move onto the drive or other space to be able to cross within government guidelines.

In view of my experience, I wonder whether the expenditure incurred by SHDC was really necessary?

I would have much preferred the council to resolve the future of the old Johnson Hospital and nursing accommodation, take some effective action on the old Post Office sorting office in the Crescent or similarly take some action on the Bull and Monkie site.

All of these areas are a blot on the landscape of Spalding, especially the Johnson Hospital which was left to the people of Spalding in perpetuity and it is a travesty that it should be left in such a dilapidated state.

The town is dying and after coronavirus will die more quickly.

What about the old Beales store?

Now that the council, apparently will no longer supply tables for the outdoor market, could this become an indoor market?

M&S Food will be leaving. Has the business development councillor thought now that Carphone Warehouse is empty, about approaching M&S and proposing they take over the Carphone Warehouse premises to expand their present store and as an incentive, a rates holiday for a certain period of time?

Come on SHDC councillors and officials. Do something for the town to justify your costs.
