LETTERS – ‘Remoaners’ looking to undermine

Those that are calling for a second referendum are seeking to undermine our democracy, and shatter the last remnants of any trust people have in our politicians.

Personally, I’m happy to continue having referenda on Britain’s membership of the EU every 50 years. However, the London centric remainers seem to think that democracy is only legitimate when it confirms their own prejudices, which is why they are now pushing for a second referendum.

They have a website for collecting signatures, but when I visited their homepage it didn’t actually say – What question they wanted to ask; who they think should be allowed to vote; or how they propose the votes should be counted.

So, they’re emphatic they want a vote, but circumspect about the particulars. Smell a rat? If a second referendum is supposed to be so good then why can’t they say what the actual choice or choices would be? And if they can’t, how can they know it’s good?

I decided to dig a bit deeper, and when you scratch below the surface it is clear that the remoaners don’t actually want a democratic vote, instead they want to fix the outcome of a second referendum.

Remember their petition after the referendum? “We the undersigned call upon HM Government to implement a rule that if the remain or leave vote is less than 60 per cent based on a turnout of less than 75 per cent then there should be another referendum”.

Britain’s electorate is 40 million so a 75 per cent turnout would be 33.75 million. 60 per cent of 33.75 is 20,250,000. So according to their formula Leave could amass a record-smashing 20 million votes – 17.5 million secured in the 2016 referendum – but remain would only require 13 million votes to keep us in the EU! Or to put it another way – Leave could win by over 7 million votes and we would still not actually leave the EU!

So upon closer inspection the ‘second referendum‘ remoaners advocate is not actually an exercise in democracy at all, but a war against it – a pseudo-democratic sham in which the phrasing of the question, or the method of counting is mendaciously designed to fix the outcome so we never leave the EU.
