LETTERS – Attack prompted letter

Since moving to Spalding about 12 years ago, I have become a great admirer of the local press here, not least among them being the weekly issue of The Voice.

One really ace feature to whose return I am really looking forward, is the regular diary of the many voluntary activities in our district. What a rich diversity it presents!

Second only to that feature is your Letters page!

While not always concurring with the views expressed by readers, I invariably find them of interest!

It is a letter in your issue of August 13 which has prompted me to write to you myself.

The letter in question is a vicious attack on the integrity of Jan Whitbourn, a lady whose valuable work is often reported on in your pages.

To begin with, this letter is supported by a massive inaccuracy in its assertion that Jan is acting in pursuit of her career as a councillor.

This is nonsense, as Jan is not now, and has no aspiration to become, a councillor!

As if that huge inaccuracy in that letter was not enough, then that thoroughly vicious letter is riddled with a truly astounding parsimoniousness of spirit!

To declare a ringing rejection of the values of the British Legion, just days ahead of the 75th Anniversary of VJ Day, simply beggars belief!

To their eternal credit, that incredible generation fought for the freedom of all of us to hold our own views, be they even as obnoxious as those of your recent correspondent!
