LETTER: Why should new era for Gleed mean new name?

Why does a new era for the Sir John Gleed School mean it has to have a new name? (The Voice, May 12).

As an ex-pupil and former parent-governor at the school, I don’t understand why it has to lose its identity in this way.
Changing the school’s name for the sake of it is not going to drive forward any distinct change of success. That needs to come from an influential leader and the senior management team.

There’s a great deal of history around the school linked to the name Gleed and I, and many others I know, are proud to say we are ex-Gleed School pupils.

When a new hospital was built for the town, it kept the name Johnson because there was a recognition of it being an important part of history.

I have nothing against the school being an academy, but let’s not allow it to become another faceless academy.
As Shakespeare said: “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”.
