LETTER: Well done for pushing flags

Sir John Hayes’ April 8 column hit the issue on the nose regarding our flag.
It isn’t something to hide away out of shame, but rather an emblem of personal and shared pride that we can all gather around as one nation.
As Sir John rightly calls out, our so-called betters in the media, academia and politics have tried to turn national pride into something silly.
It’s the type of condescending nonsense that’s been going on for too long without a rebuttal and it’s about time it was called it out for what it is.
Regular people do not feel stupid or bigoted when they hang the Union Jack or our County Flag in their home or see it flying from a building.
They recognise that it is a flag which represents everything good that we are as a nation.
From the armed forces, the NHS, our welfare system and beyond the Union Jack symbolises the great and good, as Sir John puts it, of the United Kingdom in which we can all find common ground.
Recognising the flags as the local and national rallying points they are makes the logic of flying them on government buildings and hospitals clear.
The Union Flag embodies a shared connection between us all and that’s something we could use more of nowadays, and our Lincolnshire flag speaks volumes about our historic county.
So well done to John and others for pushing for the flags to fly high and proud all year round.
