LETTER: No interest in welfare

For a change I decided to buy the Sunday Times last weekend. Page 5 highlighted its seasonal appeal aimed at bringing “respite to children whose lives are blighted by deprivation”. This was supported by a more in depth article in the Sunday Times Magazine.

I confess to being deeply moved by the conditions in which some of these children and families live and wondered – how can this be? We have now had ten years of Conservative Governments during which time Sir John Hayes and his colleagues have consistently supported measures that have exacerbated this very poverty (check out TheyWorkForYou.com as per Mr Meeking’s letter in The Voice dated November 20).

It should be remembered that at the same time as the Government was imposing these measures on the less fortunate members of society the wealthiest people, including MPs enjoyed the benefits of a reduction in taxation when the income threshold for paying higher rates tax was increased.

We should all be ashamed that such an appeal is even necessary in one of the richest countries in the world. Time to wake up to the fact that successive Conservative Governments, especially as they move further to the right, are not interested in the welfare of ‘ordinary people’ so why do
we vote for them? – I am bemused.

Finally, I refer your readers to the website ‘boris-johnson-lies.com’ which is compiled by political journalist Peter Oborne. An attempt to assess the veracity of statements made, not only by The Prime Minister, but other senior Conservative politicians. If you take the time and trouble to look at some of the statements examined you may well ask yourself – do I really want this man and his colleagues as my Prime Minister?

Food for thought.
