LETTER: Bad practice on our roads prevails

I watched traffic going past my home for about an hour at school leaving time on Wednesday (March 15), when the road use was busy, and saw eight people in particular.

Two I could clearly see were using their phones, both of them professional drivers. The rest of them were looking down at their lap, it was fairly obvious as to what they were doing.
So much for increasing the fines for using a phone at the wheel.

I also saw two parents on bikes cycle past my home, one with a child sitting on the crossbar and dad on the seat, and another standing on her pedals with the child sitting on the seat with nowhere to rest her feet, flapping very close to the back wheel.
It looks like cyclists have taken it up a notch and are proving to be even more stupid than before. Someone from the Pedals group had a go at me last time I wrote about cyclists, saying these offenders are in a minority. Somehow I don’t think so.

You can go out anytime day or night and see cyclists doing wrong ie: texting while cycling, cycling with no hands. If you do either of these in a car supposedly it’s an offence. Try getting up early in the morning (ie when the streetlights are turned off) and watch how many fools are cycling in the pitch black with no lights and wearing dark clothing.

I can assure you before you have another go it’s not a minority, more like 50/50 now.

The police do nothing about cyclists as I also saw a police vehicle drive past. A couple of seconds later a cyclist rode past on the path, who they had just drove past without a word.
It’s not a major crime, but if people are not warned about their wrongdoing then it just gets worse and worse. It’s seems they are turning a blind eye to cyclists’ behaviour as the government want more and more people to get on their bikes as the population in the UK grows.

Understandable but bad behaviour is not acceptable and can only lead to accidents.
