I have just driven from Peterborough to Spalding on the new road at peak time. There were no hold-ups and the traffic moved continuously at 50 to 60mph.
I do understand that dualling the road would enable traffic to flow much more easily but is it necessary or achievable?
The reasons put forward are predominantly commercial around improved journey times for HGVs. However, the current speed restrictions for HGVS on single carriage roads will rise from 40 ph to 50mph in April this year.
If the road were a dual carriageway it would be 60mph from April. So is an increase of 10mph over a distance of 15 miles worth it?
None of the bridges are big enough for a dual carriageway, the roundabouts would have to be rebuilt and all the landscaping would be for nothing. More land would need purchasing and a public consultation would be required.
Some root cause analysis would reveal the problem, too many lorries on the road!
What has happened to the rail hub that is suppose to take HGVs off the roads? Or is that another failed project championed by our Conservative MP and Conservative controlled council?
The dualling of the road is blatant electioneering.
John Hayes knows it will never happen, the cost and traffic chaos during construction would not equal the benefit. Quite how he persuaded local businesses to support him I will never know. It just makes them all seem a bit under informed and poorly advised.
Let’s be honest and focus on what may be achievable (like the rail hub?)
