Holbeach United could give boss Hayes his ‘best achievement’ in management

Three wins from Holbeach United’s final six games should be enough to secure them at least a top five finish.

That’s according to boss Seb Hayes, who insists that placing that high – coupled with victory in the Lincs FA Senior Trophy next month – would be his best achievement as a manager.

Holbeach’s run-in begins at eighth-placed Daventry Town on Saturday (3pm) and contains only one match against a team outside of the current top eight.

Hayes knows it won’t be easy, but insists that a top five finish would represent an “unbelievable season” for his charges.

“They are all hard games from now on,” said the Tigers chief. “I think we need three wins from the six games to cement a top five position.

“Of course we can still finish higher, but anything better than fifth would be a massive bonus.

“We’ve just got to push as hard as we can and see where we end up.

“After Saturday’s win I spoke to a few of the fans, who all felt we’ve done really well to be as consistently high in the table as we have been this season.

“I’ve said it numerous times, but if we get top five and win the cup, we’ll have had an unbelievable season.

“When I think about it, I really think that doing that would be my best achievement in football management.

“Yes, I managed a Huntingdon Town side that won trophies. But I inherited that side, the vast majority of this Holbeach team was built by me and my managerial staff.

“It’s a great group and I can tell that the lads really want to meet these targets as much as I do.”

The Tigers will have a full-strength squad for Saturday’s game at Communications Park, with Hayes set to continue rotating his players.

That means that anybody that didn’t start Wednesday’s incredible 10-0 win over Northampton Sileby Rangers will likely be handed a starting shirt.

“Rotating keeps the players fresh and hungry,” added Hayes. “We’ve got a cup final on the horizon and want them chomping at the bit for a place in the team.

“They all understand the situation and I believe that the squad is looking very strong.

“The pressure is off and we look like our old selves.”

Although Hayes only has eyes for a top five finish, Holbeach do go into Saturday’s game in third place – just six points behind leaders Yaxley with a game in hand. Second-placed Wisbech Town are level with Holbeach, but have two games in hand on Hayes’ side.
