Grant aims to stop South Holland residents being made homeless this winter

Around £35,000 in funding has been granted in an attempt to stop more people being made homeless in South Holland this winter.

The district council has been awarded the money as part of the Homelessness Prevention Grant announced by central government.

The purpose of this one-off payment is to support low-income private renters with COVID-19 related rent arrears to avoid eviction or find a new home where necessary in order to prevent homelessness, with local authorities able to target funding to those who need it most and help them get back on their feet.

The £34,936 funding was announced in a joint-statement of the South and East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership which also announced that East Lindsey District Council had received £84,810 and Boston Borough Council £27,577.

It has to be allocated by March.

A joint statement released attributed to each council’s portfolio holders – Coun Martin Griggs from Boston Borough Council, Coun William Gray from East Lindsey District Council and Coun Christine Lawton from South Holland District Council, said: “It is great news that those households hit hard by Covid-related arrears may be able to access financial support.

“Throughout the pandemic our councils have been able to offer support to the most vulnerable families, and this new funding will help those that are still struggling to get back on their feet as we continue to recover from the ongoing impact of COVID-19.

“It is vital we continue to provide support as we enter the winter months and use this funding to help people most at risk of losing their home.”
