Gr-eight weekend for goal-hungry Spalding Poachers

An amazing 16 unanswered goals in two games across different competitions made it a weekend to remember for Spalding Poachers 1st.

The Spalding women started their goal glut with an 8-0 victory over Cambs Uni ladies’ 2nd in East Women’s League Division 2NW to climb up to third in the standings.

Katie Gray and Kelly Tuplin both notched early to make it 2-0 after three minutes at Surfleet’s Glen Park, before Jacqui Hunter grabbed a third on 12 minutes.

Wing wizard Kelly Slater then fired her ‘best-ever goal’ and Karen Timby got in on the act to put Poachers 5-0 ahead at the break.

Further goals from Gray, Tuplin and Roz Dennis rounded off the rout in the second half.

Not content with that, Poachers then thrashed St Neots ladies’ 1st 8-0 to get their England Hockey Trophy campaign off to the best possible start. This time Timby led the charge with a treble, while Tuplin (2), Kelly Slater (2) and Hunter also got in on the act.

Meanwhile, Long Sutton ladies’ 1st slipped to their first loss of the Division 2NW season as they were edged out 2-1 by leaders City of Peterborough (COP) 1st.

Catherine Amps fired the city side ahead, but Sutton were unfortunate not to level when Leanne Woodhead struck the post.

Boosted by that, Robyn Gribble levelled matters from a short corner.

However, Katie Lee put COP back ahead before the break – and Sutton couldn’t find a leveller.

Down in Division 3NW (N), Spalding Poachers 2nd remain unbeaten after drawing 0-0 at leaders Leadenham ladies’ 1st.

In what as an end-to-end game, Lisa Ceaser was named player of the match in a top team showing from the Spalding girls.

In the same division, Spalding Poachers 3rd went down 5-1 at home to Skegness ladies’ 1st. Alex Petty’s goal made it 1-1 at the break, but Skeg soon ran away with it.
