Gosberton scheme part of flood prevention drive

A repaired drainage scheme in Gosberton is one of £2.2m projects Lincolnshire County Council says its spending on flooding problems.

The authority says nine schemes have been completed and 24 are in progress as part of the drive.

Coun Colin Davie, executive member for environment at Lincolnshire County Council, explains: “Back in February, we agreed a £2.2million investment in drainage investigations and flood repairs across Lincolnshire. I’m delighted to say the programme of works is well underway – making huge changes in helping to reduce the risk of flooding in the county.

“For example, we’ve repaired the damaged drainage system in Gosberton, made repairs to a bank slip along a watercourse in Kelsey, and we’ve repaired and restored the drainage system in the centre of Woodhall Spa.

“We’re now starting significant projects to address long standing drainage and flooding issues in Cherry Willingham, Kirton and Scothern. Our highways teams will continue to carry out further investigations and repairs at 15 more locations across the county.

“These works build on the projects our teams have delivered in 2020/21 costing £350,000, and the £150,000 in the maintenance programme of the River Steeping catchment.”

Coun Richard Davies, executive member for highways at Lincolnshire County Council, added: “We maintain over 150,000 gullies, offlets and culverts right across Lincolnshire. Over recent years we’ve seen more heavy rain and prolonged periods of wet weather, and so we’re dealing with issues caused by high volumes of water in drains more and more often.

“Unfortunately many will understand first-hand the devastating consequences that flooding can have on homes, livelihoods and communities. This is why it is vital that we continue to invest in projects like this which drastically reduce the risk and bring peace of mind to local residents.”
