Gardeners want to help charities

Gardeners whose Crowland-based group closed after 40 years are on the lookout for charities to give its remaining money to.

The Crowland Allotment and Garden Society held its last meeting in September 2019 due to the advancing age of the group members.

It used to hold annual flower and vegetable shows in the town as well as its Christmas buffet dances. But with no new members coming through they’ve closed.

They do have some funds and would like local charities to come forward to potentially receive a donation.

The group was formed some 40 years ago from an original idea by chairman John Chambers and secretary Brian Luter,

Finding a home at The Carpenter’s Arms and boosted by a strong band of volunteers, the club boasted around 250 members at its peak.

One of the original committee members Graham Searle said: “Due to declining membership less than 30, the club’s inability to attract committee members and helpers and the loss of premises, a decision was taken that the club must close in September 2019. We will shortly be in a position to distribute limited residual funds to selected charities and/or local good causes.”

Any organisation wishing to be considered for a donation should request it in writing to Neville Glover 62 Postland Road, Crowland, Peterborough, PE6 0JB by Wednesday, April 12.

A final meeting is due to take place In the Parish Room, Hall Street, Crowland to agree the distribution of funds when safe following the Coronavirus crisis.
