Fountain plan back

Plans have been resubmitted to site the Johnson drinking fountain in Spalding’s Ayscoughfee Gardens.

South Holland District Council is applying to put the 19th century structure in the grounds of the hall.

There had been a petition to have it put in the town centre, but the application is for the former site of a paddling pool.

It had previously been submitted in April but was then suddenly withdrawn.

Spalding and District Civic Society, which led the calls for the fountain to be in Hall Place, said that the withdrawal was due to them not having been consulted.

The new application includes an updated heritage assessment on behalf of the council, including looking at placing it back in Hall Place.

“It must be considered the that the reintroduction of the fountain here would not be visually as harmonious as would have been the case in 1874,” the report states.
