Former doctor carried out violent rape

 

Dr Joel Ajewole, 61, was questioned after his victim sought help from firefighters who were working on a street in south Lincolnshire.

 

The woman, who can not be named, later revealed to police that she had been raped by Ajewole.

 

In her statement the victim described how Ajewole “acted like a wild animal” during the rape in March this year – squeezing her throat and threatening her with a pair of scissors.

 

Ajewole also threatened to kill the woman and himself as he did not want to go to prison.

 

During her ordeal the woman was so frightened that she began to pray, Lincoln Crown Court was told.

 

The court heard Ajewole had been employed as an A&E doctor at Boston’s Pilgrim Hospital but had not worked for six years after a complaint was made against him by a patient’s family.

 

Michael Crammer-Brown, mitigating, said it was plain that Ajewole had been suffering from a depressive illness for several years and was having difficulties with anger management.

 

Mr Crammer-Brown told the court Ajewole qualified as a doctor in Nigeria and had spent 30 years working as an A&E doctor after coming to the UK from the Seychelles.

 

Mr Cranmer-Brown said Ajewole was now a “broken man.”

 

“He would say he has been a good man who has worked hard to pay for his family,” Mr Cranmer-Brown added.

 

“He came to the UK because he wanted his children to go to English universities. 

 

“All three of his children have done well and are in professions.”

 

Mr Cranmer-Brown said Ajewole had stopped practicing as a doctor after losing his job at Boston.

 

“He has not been able to talk to me about the circumstances of this,” Mr Cranmer-Brown added. “It is obviously distressing for him.”

 

Ajewole pleaded guilty to two charges of rape and one offence of assault by penetration.

 

Passing sentence Judge John Pini QC told Ajewole: “You are an educated man, a qualified doctor, but had stopped practicing at the time of these incidents.”

 

But the judge reminded Ajewole how his victim had described him as “acting like a wild animal.”

 

Judge Pini said: “She says she was so frightened that she started to pray.”
