Drunk driver hit tree

Residents in a Spalding street were woken by the sound of screeching tyres and a drink-driver’s car hitting a tree.

A Peugeot 508 being driven by Andrius Jankauskas left St Thomas’s Road at about 11.30pm on April 9.
He was still twice the alcohol limit when he gave an evidential breath test more than four hours later.
Prosecutor Paul Wood told Boston Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday: “Police came to the scene and found the defendant heavily intoxicated, stumbling and swaying.
“A man present had been alerted by the screeching or tyres and a bang.
“Police say there was a fair old skid mark behind the vehicle, which would tend to suggest an excessive speed.”
Jankauskas, a factory worker, was arrested after blowing positive at the roadside and taken to hospital to be checked over.
“It wasn’t until shortly before 4am that he produced readings on the intoxilyser,” said Mr Wood.
Jankauskas blew 78 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath; the legal limit being 35.
The defendant, formerly of Patriot Close in Spalding and now living in London Road, pleaded guilty to drink-driving.
Phillipa Chatterton, mitigating, said: “He accepts he made a very foolish decision in driving.
“Thankfully no one was injured, although the car was written off.”
Jankauskas was disqualified for 20 months, which can be cut by completing a drink-driver rehabilitation course.
He was also fined £335 and told to pay £219 in costs and victim surcharge.
