A 20-year-old who ‘glassed’ another man in a Spalding nightspot has been ordered to carry out unpaid work and pay compensation to his victim, by magistrates in Boston.
Austin Carter of Cobgate, Whaplode, who admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, as well as possessing cannabis, struck the man, Haroldas Mantvydas, with a glass he was holding following an exchange of words in Bentley’s on May 19.
Dan Pietryka, prosecuting, said Mr Mantvydas was out with his partner and two friends in Bentley’s in New Road just after midnight when, after an exchange of words with a group of men, including Carter, who were dancing very close to them, he was struck by a glass in the head, which smashed and caused cuts to his ear.
He said Mr Mantvydas fell and was then dragged across the floor through the broken glass causing cuts to his elbows and knees, before Carter ran off.
After his arrest, Carter said he was so drunk he didn’t even remember what pub he was in or dragging him through broken glass.
Mr Pietryka said a small amount of cannabis was found on Carter.
Mitigating, Helen Coney said Carter had not drunk since the incident.
She said he had not picked up the glass but it had been held in his hand prior to striking the victim who, she added, had not needed hospital treatment.
Ordering him to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work for the community, the magistrates told Carter the
‘sequence of events could have been a lot worse’.
He was also ordered to pay £200 compensation to Mr Mantvydas and £170 in costs and charges.
