Charity match in memory of mum

A local football manager is putting on a special game this week in memory of his mum who he is also to run this year’s London Marathon for.

Bobby Patterson, the co-manager of Moulton Harrox, is working with another of his former sides, Holbeach United, to raise even more money for The British Heart Foundation.

Margaret Patterson died suddenly aged 60 just before Christmas in 2011.

“I’ve always wanted to do something in her memory,” Bobby (35) said.

“One of my friends did the London Marathon last year and I’d been ribbing him saying it must be really easy so he told me I ought to apply.

“I didn’t really expect to get in but I spoke to The British Heart Foundation about my mum and they offered me a place.

“Mum just went to bed one night and didn’t get up again the next morning.

“There wasn’t any illness. She just had a major heart attack.

“Doing the run is in memory of her and I’ve two lovely boys – Teddy (6) and Billy (3) – who never knew their nanny. They know all about her though and I guess this is for them too.”

The match between legends teams from Holbeach United and Moulton Harrox kicks off at 2pm at Carter’s Park in Holbeach and is followed by the band Mullered at the Mill at the Tigers Sports Bar.

The Moulton side is set to be largely made up of the side that claimed a Peterborough and District League treble in 2012/13 while many of Holbeach’s 2003 league winning are set to turn out in the fixture.

The manager of that side Dick Creasey, will manage the Tigers in the game with Dean Elston and Phil Barnes having put that side together.

Paul Crowson will be in charge of Harrox and hoping to lift the trophy provided courtesy of Coronation Bars.

Moulton might have to do without Bobby himself though who suffered a groin strain turning out for the reserves recently.

“I’ve been training since the New Year for the marathon but I’ve had to slow down a little with this injury.

“I should be able to turn out on Sunday at some stage though.”

Admission to Carter’s Park is £2 on Sunday with kick off at 2pm.
