Barnes praises key Drury save as Holbeach United smash six in first league win

Five different players were on the scoresheet as Holbeach United turned on the style to secure their first win of the Uhlsport UCL Premier Division season.

Jon Fairweather (10), Will Barnes (31), Josh Ford (33 and 63), Spencer Tinkler (37) and Jonny Lockie (90) all netted as the Tigers thrashed Oadby Town 6-0 at Carter’s Park.

Boss Phil Barnes felt his side got what they deserved, but admitted that things could have been different if Ricky Drury hadn’t saved a penalty when the score was just 1-0 and was disappointed to see son Will sent off later on in the game.

Barnes said: “It was nice to get a positive result! I think the scoreline was fair, we got what we deseved on the day – our finishing was great.

“Although I must give credit to Ricky Drury, his penalty save at 1-0 was a big moment. If that went in, it could have been a different game at 1-1.

“We’re pleased to have kept a clean sheet, too. Overall it’s a much-needed boost for us all.

“I was pleased we had five different scorers. Josh (Ford) played really well and deserved his two goals, while it was nice for Will (Barnes) to get his first competitive goal.

“We were all a bit disappointed about the red card, though. It didn’t even look a foul, to be honest.”

Holbeach took an early lead when defender Fairweather headed home a free-kick from Ford on ten minutes.

Oadby had the chance to level when a penalty was awarded for a foul in the box following a corner, but Drury saved superbly from Suleiman Nassor.

The miss proved costly for the visitors and it was soon 2-0 when Will Barnes turned home Luke Wilson’s cross on the half hour.

Not done there, Holbeach made it 3-0 two minutes later when Ford fired home from distance before making it three goals in six minutes when skipper Tinkler finished off a corner.

That man Ford was on the scoresheet again direct from a free-kick on the hour, while Jonny Lockie rounded off the rout when he hooked home Dan Dougill’s corner in added time.

The one blot on the Tigers’ copybook was a red card for Will Barnes (professional foul) 15 minutes from time, but it failed to take the gloss off a top team showing.

Holbeach next host Peterborough Northern Star on Wednesday night (7.45pm).
