Colleagues help raise funds in dad’s memory

Employees at a Spalding company have been inspired to raise money for a hospice thanks to a colleague’s experiences.

Sam Lee, who works at Spalding based Fowler Welch, wanted to give something back to St Barnabas Office for the way they cared for her father Dermot McGinley in 2017.

He spent two months at the hospice after being diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Colleagues at Fowler Welch helped with a Give a Gift event recently where colleagues brought in items to be raffled or used in a tombola.

Sam said: “I give monthly to St Barnabas Hospice and am a member of their lottery, but it is lovely that my workplace has got involved too.

“The care he received was fantastic.

“It was personal, honest and responsive, and nothing was too much trouble.

“The nurses treated him as if he was their own father, and he looked forward to his shave every morning.

“I was particularly touched when I overheard a nurse telling Dad to ‘have a safe journey’ as she left the day before he passed away.

“He would be really proud of the fundraising and it’s a wonderful way to keep his memory alive.”

Fowler Welch are still working out how much they raised as a result of the event.

Vikki Allen, Community Fundraiser at St Barnabas Hospice, said: “We are delighted that Fowler Welch has chosen to fundraise for us, and the hard work put into organising the Give a Gift event is admirable.

“The money raised from the tombolas and raffles using these gifts will help us care for more people in Lincolnshire living with a life-limiting or terminal illness, and their families and carers.”
