Your chance to get involved with Spalding United

With increasing success on the pitch at Spalding United, more is being demanded of the small band of loyal volunteers off it.

With that in mind, the Tulips are turning to the public for a helping hand.

The club would like to make it known that there is a demand for volunteers to help in a number of capacities at the Sir Halley Stewart Field, both on matchdays and in other capacities, throughout the season.

Numerous positions are open to ease the burden of those currently finding themselves multi-tasking on a number of fronts.

This covers steward roles, matchday hospitality, ground maintenance, photography and videography, matchday programme editorial, design and contribution, and kit maintenance.

With that in mind, an informal open meeting will be held in the Tulips Social Club (within the Sir Halley complex on Winfrey Avenue) on Wednesday, April 22, with the objective of trying to drum up some more invaluable backroom support for the 2015/16 season. Kick off is scheduled for 7.30pm, with doors open from 7.15pm.

Anyone who’d like to become involved, but who is unable to make the meeting, can email Tulips press officer Ray Tucker at ray.tucker@talktalk.net to declare their interest.

  • If you’ve been down to the Sir Halley recently, you’ll have noticed the club’s impressive new enclosure.

This season, the Tulips have been faced with a number of ground improvement tasks in a bid to qualify for the necessary grading certificate, which enables them to progress upwards in the pyramid system and be promoted to the Premier Division of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League, should they be in that position come the end of the campaign.

The biggest and most expensive item for the Tulips has been the provision of the enclosure for an additional 80 spectators. After numerous discussions and sifting through quotations, the solution was provided, out of the blue, by one of their own officers, youth section chairman, Pete Semmence, who off the cuff, calmly said: “I think I could make one of those”, pointing to a portable unit installed a few years ago.

Semmence, who runs a small family engineering business specialising in the repair and renovation of commercial heating boilers and valves, was immediately and without reservation, offered the job. Working to a very tight time schedule, the results of his labours were in situ for the end of March inspection.

The new structure, 12 metres in length and including four steps, enabling not 80, but 100-plus spectators to watch a game in comparative comfort, received high praise from the FA inspector, and the Tulips have been successful in obtaining a Grade D certificate.

Semmence, who was helped throughout by Tulips’ Social Club manager Andy Gay, is delighted by the very complimentary remarks on his handiwork, and says he would seriously consider other offers of work of this kind.
