Spalding National Citizen Service in action.

Young citizens clean up Spalding and give to good causes

Members of Spalding’s National Citizen Service (NCS) volunteer programme have raised almost £400 for local causes.

By spending a fortnight of their summer break in doing good deeds in Spalding, the 15 to 17-year-old NFC members raised £374 for the 5th Spalding Brownies and Spalding Rugby Football Club.

The NFS programme, which is designed to build confidence and skills through helping others, lasted a total of four weeks and was in three phases that took them across the East Midlands.

“They have completed a team-building workshop and skills building phase away at Nottingham University, a second phase at PGL, Caythorpe, developing further team building and leadership skills by completing activities such as raft building and in the final two-week phase they have been based back in Spalding at the South Holland Centre,” said Chris Hyde from Sound of Spitfire radio, who helped with the group’s litter picking morning.

They were also joined by South Holland District Councillor Jack McLean.

To raise money, NFC members baked cupcakes to sell, held a face painting session for children, ran a name the bear competition and on the day after the litter pick, a quiz night at the Punch Bowl pub on New Road.

Molly Smith, from NCS Spalding is also a leader at 5th Spalding Brownies.

She was fundraising in the hope they would get £130 for essential books in September.

Chris said: “We have been publicly supporting the NCS Spalding team throughout the last two weeks and hope that they raise enough money to help both youth groups.”

The target was met and surpassed.
